Pokemon is rated at a 3+ by PEGI, which means it's suitable for everybody – the equivalent of a film with a Universal rating. Yes, you battle Pokemon, but it's not in a vicious way at all, and the Pokemon never die when they lose – they simply faint and can be revived, good as new, in a Pokemon Centre.
Who wouldn't like Pokemon? In Pokemon Black and White, you get to build up your own team of virtual pet-type creatures, who help you battle other Pokemon, and grow stronger as they do so, as you set out on your quest to become the Pokemon Champion – the best Pokemon trainer in the region.

The emphasis in Pokemon is on taking care of your creatures, friendship and loyalty. The battles are never violent and your Pokemon never die – they simply faint and can't battle again until you get them healed at a Pokemon Centre, where they'll be back good as new. It's a whole new world to explore and lose yourself in, with cool creatures, a simple, but deep battling system, and an epic story to tie everything together.

The one minor downside of the story, however, is that there is quite a lot of reading involved, which is essential to understanding the game - so your child will need to be quite confident at reading to fully enjoy Pokemon. That said, this is a game that they'll enjoy so much and actively want to play, that it may well have the added side-effect of helping your child improve their reading.
Pokemon is a game that's built around sharing and multiplayer - although you will need two copies of the game to do this. Each copy has different "exclusive" Pokemon, which means if you want to catch 'em all, you'll have to trade between versions with a friend. Some Pokemon also only evolve when their traded, so experimenting, and learning about the world of Pokemon as you go is an important part of the game. You'll be battling, trading, and sometimes just hanging out in the meet-up rooms at the Pokemon centre, where you can draw pictures, and much more, either over local wireless, or online.
Pokemon Black/White - Nintendo DS Review

Positives

  • New Pokemon mean you can't rely on your old tried and tested team...
  • Story plays more of a part this time round.
  • Random healers dotted round forests etc save you trekking back to a Pokemon Centre.

Negatives

  • ...but I kind of miss my Pikachu and Togepi.
  • Oshawott goes from cute to downright scary when it evolves.
  • Pidove, the Pidgy rip-off.
