Regeneration has its benefits

Every Doctor Who is in LEGO Dimensions see it in action
2nd August, 2015 By Marti Bennett

It was all the way back in February we got our first teaser for LEGO Doctor Who. A screenshot of nothing more than the current (12th) Doctor (Peter Capaldi) in LEGO form. Months later, LEGO Dimensions was announced and the first images of the transformed Doctor, along with T.A.R.D.I.S and companion K-9 appeared on the internet as one of the LEGO Dimensions add-on play sets. But as with all things LEGO Dimensions, it turns out there's more to the Doctor's appearance than meets the eye. Not only will the latest Doctor be given a LEGO makeover in the game - but every other Doctor will also be playable too. And all with just one figure.

Apparently, the trick here is that when you die as the LEGO Doctor, you'll come back as the next doctor, chronologically. So Peter Capaldi will become William Hartnell, Peter Davison will become Colin Baker, and so on and so forth. We get the feeling there'll be a lot of purposeful LEGO deaths when fans first get the game, just so you get to play as your favourite doctor, whether it's David Tennant. Or Tom Baker. Or War Doctor. Or whichever your favourite may be.

While it may make getting to play as your favourite doctor a bit tricky, this is the latest in a long line of great little touches that makes us think LEGO Dimensions may turn out to be something very special indeed. In fact, in perhaps an even cooler touch, the Doctor you're playing as will also change the look and feel of the T.A.R.D.I.S, and the Doctor Who theme tune that plays in the level.

In the trailer above, we get to see a sneak peak at how the Doctor's story will play out in the game. We see the Doctor saving Batman, Gandalf, and Wyldstyle, and of course, in true time travelling Doctor Who style, he claims to have met them all before - but they haven't met him yet.

The trailer also shows a glimpse of various levels of the game. The Scooby-doo levels are delightfully cel-shaded, while it's Doctor meets Doc (Emmett Brown) in Back to the Future, which we hope has some very timey-wimey consequences.

Those who aren't too chuffed with the idea of having to shell out for a separate add-on in order get their Doctor Who fix needn't fear, either, as although the ability to play as the Doctor will only be available to those who buy the add-on, and therefore own the figure, it's been confirmed the Doctor will make an appearance in the normal LEGO Dimensions story, in a Doctor Who themed level. So no matter which character you're playing as, even without buying the Doctor Who add-on, you'll be able to get a Time Lord fix.

This news for Doctor Who fans, as the 9th Doctor would say, is fantastic!
