Wii U Lets You Transfer Shop Purchases From The Wii

And all your save games too

Developer: Nintendo

Good news everyone! If you're anything like us, with our weakness for downloadable games, you may well find you have a list of WiiWare and Virtual Console games a mile long sitting on your Wii, many of which you may not have finished yet. Take the watery puzzle-platformer, Hydroventure for example – struggling to get past one of the gloopy 'boss' levels, it's sat on the back-burner for several months; or there's Pokemon Rumble, the toy battling spin-off that we haven't quite managed to "Catch 'em all" on – not to mention the muscle-bound craziness of Muscle March that never fails to cheer us up...

Only in Japan...

But thankfully, getting a new console doesn't mean you have to leave your backlog behind, as Nintendo have announced that you'll be able to shift them all over en masse to the Wii U, if you so desire. You'll also be able to shift all your saves across too, both for downloadable games and regular disc-based titles, so you won't need to leave your record-breaking Wii Sports Resort table tennis score behind when you upgrade. Seeing as the Wii U can play all your old Wii games, and now your WiiWare and Virtual Console purchases too, there seems like there's not going to be an awful lot of reasons to hang on to your Wii once you have a Wii U – except maybe for playing GameCube games on, anyway.

So far we know very little of the actual logistics of the transferring; just that it'll be possible once they've worked out how best to do it, although, this being Nintendo and all, we're imagining it'll be a simple, one touch procedure, rather than the DSi-to-3DS system transfer tool, where you need to download a little application to the DSi from the shop to kick the whole process off. We guess we'll have to wait and see; at least they're working on something that means you don't have to buy Mario 64 for the forth time, anyway.
