Whilst we still haven't received Professor Layton's 3rd adventure, (Professor Layton and the Unwound Future), it's always good to know that there are more games in the works for once we inevitably polish off every last puzzle in the current installment.

Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle (his 5th escapade) was announced a few days ago for the 3DS. Taking place after the events of the 4th game (Spectre's Flute), but before the events of the first (Curious Village), Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle sees the Professor and his trusty apprentice Luke heading to the mysterious Casino City, in search of the truth about the Mask of Miracle.

Hopefully this is a rough translation, "Look how busy even at night" doesn't sound like the kind of thing Layton's apprentice normally comes out with.

Like the previous games in the series, searching for the truth will involve you exploring Casino City and solving puzzles for it's inhabitants, with some of the puzzles presumably making use of the 3DS's 3D capabilities. We'd be suprised if there isn't at least one ball in a maze puzzle in there, requiring you to tilt the 3DS itself to encourage the ball to it's correct place.

As of yet, there's no specific release date, but unless we get both the 3rd and 4th Professor Layton games on the DS before Christmas, we'd hazard a guess at it not being a 3DS launch title.

Professor Layton and the Unwound Future (the 3rd game in the series) is set for a September release date in North America, so a UK release can't be long after that. Check back then for our full review.
