The original Freakyforms: Your Creations Alive! was one of the first 3DS Download Software titles to grace the eShop, and probably one of the more unusual games available - on the eShop, or anywhere else for that matter. Part creation, part exploration, it tasked you with creating your very own creature from a huge variety of options, then taking it for a wander round a planet filled with a whole cast of colourful characters.
To get the idea of what Freakyforms is all about - imagine a load of different Lego bricks, which you can combine to make whatever you can imagine. On Freakyforms, the body parts that make up your creations, or Formees, are something like that. By piecing together the shapes, accessories and appendages, along with wheels, wings and more, you can design anything you want - so long as you can do it in twenty pieces or less, anyway. On your journey around the planet, you'll come across other characters who ask you to complete tasks for them - do as they ask, and you'll unlock a 'pack' of the pieces their made out of, which you can buy from the shop using the in game currency for use in your future creations much like one of the smaller Lego sets can be used with your existing buckets of bricks, really.
Once you've created your character, you get to set them free on your own customisable planet that grows with your Formee collection, giving you different regions to explore, from a meadow, to the ocean and more. While strolling or rolling around, you'll come across a whole load of ready-made characters that have moved onto your planet, who give you random objectives to complete whether it's knocking over a certain number of traffic cones, collecting some gems or eating a certain amount of cabbages.
Releasing this summer alongside the larger-screened 3DS XL comes an expanded version of the eccentric downloadable game, with more body parts to choose from and a brand new dungeon-exploring RPG mode. Inside these dungeons, you set off on a perilous journey to find a load of hidden jewels, defeating the other Formees that stand between you and the final boss. On your journey, you'll also unlock new abilities called Special Actions, which include new animations and sounds to personalise your creations further, like shooting missiles or engulfing itself in flames.
While the previous itteration let you share your creations with other players either through StreetPass, or QR Codes that could be scanned into their games, Freakyforms Deluxe adds an entirely new multiplayer mode that lets you and a friend explore your planet together. And what's even better is that that friend doesn't even have to own the game, as they can use Download Play to join in instead.
Freakyforms Deluxe: Your Creations, Alive! for the 3DS hits stores on the 28th of July - the same day as virtual art studio, New Art Academy, and the new 3DS XL console. And if Freakyforms has piqued your interest, or if you already own the downloadable version, make sure you check back over the next week or so, as we'll be showing off our creations which you'll be able to scan in and use in your game too.
