While the game's always offered you the chance to play as a character of your creation, the artwork, and trailers for the game have always featured what was made out to be the "main" character, or "official" choice - the male Commander Shepard. For Mass Effect 3, however, things are a little bit fairer.
On his official Twitter account, David Silverman, the director of marketing at BioWare has confirmed that a female version of Shepard, otherwise known as "FemShep" will be making an appearance on the boxart. She'll also be starring in a trailer closer to the launch of the game. While suddenly acknowledging a female shepherd may play havoc with the canon of the series, it's certainly a nice inclusion - and just another part of EA's attempt to make Mass Effect 3 appeal to a wider audience. The inclusion of Kinect support was step one.
